Depo-Provera

Seeking Justice for Women Harmed by Injectable Birth Control

Depo-Pervera Lawsuit Attorneys Cornell and Greene

Depo-Provera is a birth control injection that contains medroxyprogesterone acetate, a synthetic form of the human hormone, progesterone. It is administered by injection every three months and is slowly released over approximately 12 weeks. Often referred to as the Depo shot or DMPA, it prevents ovulation and thickening cervical mucus, significantly reducing the chance of pregnancy.

Recently published research has linked the use of the Depo-Provera birth control shot to intracranial meningiomas. Women who have been diagnosed with meningiomas following the use of this injectable birth control may be entitled to pursue cases for compensation.

What are Meningiomas?

A meningioma is a tumor that forms in the meninges, the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. While many meningiomas are benign, they can still press on the brain, nerves, or vessels.  Symptoms may include:

  • Vision changes (e.g., blurred vision, double vision)

  • Hearing loss or loss of smell

  • Dizziness

  • Seizures

  • Headaches

  • Numbness

  • Memory problems

Treatment of meningioma may require surgery to remove the tumor. Surgical removal of a tumor located near the brain or central nervous system may place the patient at additional risk.

Research Study Regarding Meningioma Risk and Depo Provera

A study published in the British Medical Journal in 2024 links the Depo-Provera injection, which contains medroxyprogesterone acetate, to an increased risk of developing intracranial meningiomas, particularly with prolonged use (≥1 year).

The study found that high-dose medroxyprogesterone injections (150 mg) were associated with a heightened risk of meningiomas requiring surgery.

The study examined 18,061 women who were diagnosed with and underwent surgery to remove intracranial meningioma. Women who had received Depo-Provera injections for longer than one year had an increased risk that was 5.5 times more than women who did not use the medication. Other types of birth control did not have the same risk.
