What is Mesh used in Breast Surgery?

Surgical mesh has long been used in various medical procedures.  Common types of mesh include synthetic (made from dissolvable polymers) and biologic (made from processed human or animal tissue).

Both synthetic and biologic mesh are being implanted during breast reconstruction, augmentation, reduction, and lift surgeries. It is being implanted to create internal support for breast implants, reinforce weakened tissue in breast lifts, provide structural stability during reconstruction after mastectomy, maintain breast shape, and support implant positioning. The mesh products may also be referred to as an “internal bra” to provide lasting support after breast surgery. However, significant complications from the mesh implanted during breast surgery have been reported.

What Breast Mesh Claims are Being Investigated?

Cornell & Greene is currently evaluating potential cases involving the following mesh products implanted over the past 10 years:

  • GalaFLEX, GalaFLEX Lite, GalaFORM, GalaSHAPE

  • Phasix, Phasix ST

  • AlloMax

  • FlexHD
